Bonus 2 - The Fastest 24 Hour Fast
Free
In this lesson, I'll explain the benefits of fasting, dispel common myths about it, and give you practical tips on how to make fasting easy and enjoyable. By the end, you'll understand that fasting isn't about starvation and can actually improve your health and well-being.
Introduction to Fasting
Many people believe that fasting is synonymous with feeling starved and hungry all day. I'm here to tell you that's not only wrong but also mistaken.
I'm not suggesting you should do a 24-hour fast every other day or that you must do it for a full 24 hours. Instead, I recommend fasting for 20 to 24 hours once every two weeks.
Benefits of Fasting
Fasting has numerous benefits beyond weight loss. It boosts your immune system and brain function, increases your metabolism, reduces inflammation, helps clear up acne, and improves energy levels.
Dispelling Myths About Fasting
Myth 1: Fasting will make you lose muscle mass.
This is false on many levels. Your body burns more fat than muscle when in a caloric deficit. If you consume plenty of protein and lift heavy weights on non-fasting days, your body will primarily burn fat and preserve your hard-earned muscle during fasting.
Myth 2: Religious fasting is the same as fasting for health.
Not at all. If fasting is part of your religion, that's fine, but that's not what this is about. I fast for health purposes, which looks slightly different from religious fasts. The main difference is that I still drink water during my fasts, and you can also consume vitamins and pharmaceutical drugs if they have no calories.
Myth 3: You need to start and stop your fast at a specific time.
You don't. It can be from 7 PM to 7 PM the next day, or 6 AM to 6 AM the next day. The timing is flexible. You fast because you want to improve the way you look and feel, not because you need to.
Myth 4: Your body will go into starvation mode if you fast.
Starvation mode, or adaptive thermogenesis, only kicks in if you've been eating way below your usual amount for months on end.
When you're in a constant caloric deficit for a prolonged period, your metabolism slows down because your body is trying to conserve energy, believing you're starving. Fasting once every two weeks won't trigger starvation mode. To be safe, I recommend slightly overeating once a week.
Myth 5: Eating 500 calories a day will make you less hungry than fasting the entire day.
This might seem counterintuitive, but whenever you consume anything, your digestive system starts working, and your hunger hormone kicks in. Even if you eat just a little, you'll likely feel hungrier than if you hadn't eaten anything at all.
If you avoid consuming any calories for about 20 minutes, your stomach will stop growling, and you'll no longer feel hungry. In fact, you'll feel fuller by doing nothing than if you had a snack 30 minutes earlier.
Tips for Easy and Effortless Fasting
Drink Water: Whenever you feel hungry, drink at least three cups of water. Often, our bodies confuse hunger with dehydration.
Stay Busy: The easiest way to avoid eating is to forget about it. Engage in a task you're passionate about or a hobby that absorbs your attention. This will make you forget about time, and five hours will pass in a snap.
Avoid Boredom: One of the main reasons we overeat is because we have nothing better to do. Use your fasting day to be productive, stay in motion, and get things done.
Avoid sitting in front of the TV watching something uninteresting and staring at your kitchen.Sleep In: Since you'll be accomplishing a lot, allow yourself to sleep in a bit and wake up later than usual.
Breaking the Fast: When you break your fast, don't feast on junk food. Go back to your regular healthy eating habits. Avoid sweets and junk food right before or after your fast, as it will defeat the purpose.
Instead, consume whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats. Examples of meals to have before or after your fast include rice with lentils and avocado, or couscous with lean chicken and coconut oil.
